Our Sustainable Festival

Our Kaupapa : At Grey Lynn Park Festival we take our kaupapa seriously. These are the values we have set to ensure we maintain deep respect for the land, and our community:

URBAN SUSTAINABILITY | We live in an extraordinary city with finite resources. We are curious about what is means to live urban and within our means.

COMMUNITY | We are local and love our community. We aim to design opportunities to connect, collaborate, learn and discover together.

CURIOSITY | We are curious explorers and aim to curate a diverse and inspiring programme of music, arts, entertainment, talks, food to get you thinking too!

GUARDIANSHIP | We have an important role to play as responsible guardians of the Grey Lynn Park Festival, and are proudly a zero waste event.

Our commitment:
We aim to:

  • Be light in delivery and to put more back into the community.

  • Establish a baseline by reviewing what we are doing today so we can identify how we can do better in the future.

  • Monitor our progress and seek feedback  – success or not!

  • Foster new ideas by being imaginative and change the rules to generate initiatives that help to move us forward.

  • Communicate and educate to bring the festival team, our partners and our community along the journey with us!

A Zero Waste Event: In 2019 the GLPF diverted 82% of waste from landfill. Key to our success is continuing to work closely with our vendors, stallholders, artists and festival goers by:

  • Carefully selecting food vendors and stallholders by ensuring they align and agree to our kaupapa and zero waste commitments.

  • Where practical products used or sold at the festival generate less waste i.e. they can be recycled, composted of even better yet - reused.

  • Stallholders and vendors must use at least 80% recyclable and/or compostable packaging and the use of certain materials like polystyrene food containers and plastic water bottles is either restricted and/or eliminated.

  • Stallholders and vendors must sort and remove all waste from front / back of house.

  • Composting, recycling and general waste bins are provided with a double sort process in place to make sure all items go in the appropriate bins at site.Roving voluntary bin ferries help educate festival goers in sorting waste.

  • Finding ways to promote low emission travel by taking bike, scooters, bus and walking.

  • Initiatives for the future: educational tent talks, a pōwhiri opens the day, refillable water stations, example of a dry composting toilet, worm farm and more.

Strong culture and community engagement: Our goal is to work closely with a local kāumatua and/or cultural advisor(s) to build platforms for more cultural korero and to weave in strong(er) cultural threads, both on the day and in what we stories we share on our website and social platforms throughout the year.

We feel a great sense of responsibility as guardians of the Grey Lynn Park Festival - so if you have any suggestions on what we can do better with, or if you would like to contribute to a cultural or educational element or on the day we would love to hear from you!
